The purpose of the Student Dress Standards is to establish guidelines and norms for the proper dress and grooming of all of St. Paul’s students. The goal of these standards is to encourage positive attitudes, support proper behavior, exhibit good taste, and emphasize comfort, health and safety. Our dress standards are designed to discourage expensive and/or distasteful clothing fads, which distract from the learning environment. The School Board, with faculty input, reserves the right to modify, adjust, etc. the various articles of clothing specified. The following standards apply to all children in grades 1-8: Shirts – Shirts are to be polo-style, collared knit; Oxford cloth with button-down or standard collar; or turtlenecks, knit. Shirts may be of any solid color, short or long sleeved. There is to be no lettering, words, logos, insignias, stripes or patterns, with the exception of the St. Paul Lutheran School logo knit shirts. T-shirts are to be worn on special occasions ONLY (as announced by the principal or classroom teacher). All shirts must be tucked in and of appropriate length to remain tucked in. Torn or ragged clothing is not permitted. Sweaters – Sweaters are to be V-neck, cardigan or crew neck in any solid color and must be worn with a dress code shirt. No turtleneck sweaters, fleece tops, or hooded tops are allowed. Students in grades 5th – 8th may wear a St. Paul sweatshirt which is gray with royal blue lettering. These may be ordered through the school office. Pants & Shorts - All pants must be belted or elastic-waist. No corduroy, cargo-style, baggy, flared-leg, break-way, acid-washed, or oversized slacks, jeans or shorts are allowed. No sweatpants or sweat shorts. Slacks are to be twill, solid color navy, black or tan. Denim jeans must be solid color, dark (original) blue, straight leg or boot cut, standard or relaxed fit (again, no flare, cargo, or carpenter styles). Shorts are to be twill, solid color navy, black or tan, mid-knee to 4” above the knee, no denim. Dresses, Skirts, Jumpers, Skorts are to be solid color navy, tan, or plaid as displayed in the JC Penney uniform catalog, straight or pleated, mid calf to 4” above the knee. Modesty shorts may be worn with the skirts or jumpers. No denim or corduroy is allowed Shoes - This applies to all grades, including PK and Kindergarten. Tennis shoes, any CLOSED-TOE sturdy shoe, and loafer. No sandals. Shoes must be worn with socks, hose or tights. Belts - A belt (black, brown, or navy) must be worn with any article of clothing that has belt loops. Dress code standards for children at St. Paul School apply during, as well as before and after, the school day while the students are on the school premises. This includes students enrolled in before school and after school care. During cooler weather, jackets, coats or other articles of warmer covering may be worn to school, but not in the building. Upon arrival at school, students are to go directly to their room or clothing hook and hang up their coats. If a child needs extra warmth during the day, a dress code appropriate top may be worn. DRESS CODE VIOLATIONS A student wearing an article of clothing that is determined to be outside the guidelines will receive a note explaining the nature of the inappropriate article of clothing. 1. First offense – Verbal Reminder 2. Second Offense – Note to parents 3. Third & Subsequent Offense – Parent bring item or change into PE uniform |
